The Real Barrier to Fully Automated Software
The real barrier to fully automated software creation is responsibility.
If an AI produces code but a human remains responsible for the outcome, that human still has to understand what the system is doing well enough to trust it. They need to review it, question it, and decide whether to ship it.
Responsibility forces oversight.
When something breaks, someone is accountable for the result. And whoever carries that accountability has to decide whether the system is safe to run in the first place. Making that judgment requires expertise.
It’s similar to how AI might suggest a medicine or a legal strategy. The system can generate recommendations, but doctors and lawyers are still responsible for deciding whether those recommendations are safe or appropriate.
So responsibility has to sit somewhere. It can sit with the user deploying the system, the people who built it, or the institutions behind it. But it cannot disappear.
As long as the user carries that responsibility, the process cannot be fully automated. The user still has to interpret the output and make the final call.
Full automation would require shifting that responsibility away from the user.
That could happen in a few ways.
One possibility is recognizing AI systems as independent actors in society that are responsible for the consequences of their own actions. Another is companies deploying these systems accepting the liability when things go wrong.
Until responsibility moves, the human remains part of the loop.
And as long as the human remains responsible, software creation is not fully automated. It is just heavily assisted.
